The five children’s authors on this panel have all tackled tough topics in their debut novels for middle grade readers- stories that center on racism, neurodiversity, mental illness, substance abuse, familial abandonment, grief & acceptance, foster care, and sexuality. In this session, the authors will explore how such challenging books not only reflect the lives of many of today’s young people, but also foster empathy for the realities of others (empathy which new research indicates is in decline among school-aged children), and above all, light a path of hope for child readers.
